Dan was raised by a journalist and a Justice of the Peace who instilled the importance of political awareness. He played in punk bands in the late 80s as an outlet for expressing his philosophy. He became an architect and worked for nonprofits from which he learned to organize for a better world and to construct songs that function on multiple levels.
